On September 15, 1953 Fr. Louis entered the Vocationary in Pianura of Naples, Italy where he had the joy of knowing the saintly Founder of the Society of the Divine Vocations, the Venerable Fr. Justin Russolillo. There, with the Vocationist Fathers, Fr. Louis completed his secondary and college education; he joined the religious order taking his first vows on October 28, 1959. After completing his philosophical studies he taught Italian and Latin in the Vocationary in Rome. In 1965 Fr. Louis obtained a B.A. Degree in Theology from the Pontifical University of S. Luigi in Naples and soon after was sent to New Jersey to join the first nucleus of the Vocationist Fathers in the USA. After completing his theological studies at St. Francis Seminary in Loretto, Pennsylvania, Fr. Louis was ordained a priest on May 27, 1967.
In August 1973 Fr. Louis was transferred to Newark where he worked as Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and taught English in Webster Junior High School. In 1977 Fr. Louis was assigned to serve St. Michael’s Church, where he has served as Associate Pastor, School Administrator and also as Principal of St. Michael’s School. From 1974 to 1994 Fr. Louis served with the U.S. Army Reserve, from which he retired with the rank of LTC and many military decorations.
Fr. Louis has published a biography of Fr. Justin Russolillo, Founder of the Vocationist Fathers and Sisters, and has translated into English most of Fr. Justin’s works; the Devotional was published in 1986, Spirit of Prayer in 1996 and Ascension in 1997. In 1985 Fr. Louis started to visit Nigeria with the intention of establishing there a Vocationist Mission; after several visits that dream became a reality. In 1991, Fr. Louis was instrumental in securing some land and having a project plan made. A beautiful Vocationary was built in Oparanadim, Imo State. As the Vocation Director for the
Vocationist Fathers, Fr. Louis
Continues to assist young men in their pursuit of a religious or
priestly vocation. He is extremely dedicated and is untiring in
providing services to anyone who approaches him and who is in need. Fr.
Louis is particularly sought as a Family and Marriage Counselor. In 1995 Fr. Louis was able to fulfill one of his dreams, the construction of the extension of St. Michael’s Rectory, which included several offices, a new chapel and a conference room. He was also responsible for the addition to St. Michael's School and on February 7, 1999, he presided over the blessing and dedication of its new third floor which included new science labs and computer rooms and library. His love for vocations and missions brought him to Trichur, Kerala in India to assist the newly opened Vocationary there and to provide for its future. Fr. Louis was instrumental in purchasing four and one half acres of land in Thalore, where the Vocationary relocated in June 1997. Fr. Louis was elected Superior General of the Vocationist Fathers at its General Chapter in Sicily, Italy on July 29, 2000 and was reelected second time to lead the Congregation, on July 15, 2006 and continues his duties in Rome, Italy. |
