St. Edward |
| St. Benedict Mission was officially opened on February 28, 1922, under the supervision of Rev. Brouillet, a missionary priest from Stanstead, PQ. On March 5, 1922, a house purchased for $800.00 from Mr. Henry L. Church was converted into a small chapel for Sunday mass. On July 3, 1946, St. Benedict Mission became a mission of St. Edward Church in Derby Line. In 1947, Rev. Armand P. Fortin obtained permission from Bishop Edward F. Ryan to erect a new church. Construction was completed for the celebration of Mass on Christmas Eve, 1947. |
The first Mass in Newport was said at Indian Point in the year 1840 by a priest from Province of Qubec. Rev. J.S. Michaud was named the first pastor in September 1873; he said his first Mass in a little schoolhouse with a wooden box for an altar. The cornerstone of the first church named “Star of the Sea” was blessed July 4, 1875. The completed church was blessed on August 22, 1877. The cornerstone of the Church above the foundations was laid in May 1904. Little work could be performed in the winter. This fact, coupled with work stoppage due to lack of money, prevented the church from being fully constructed prior to 1909. |
St. Edward Parish was founded in July 1946 by Rev. Armand P. Fortin. Prior to the construction of the existing Catholic church, religious services were held in the Derby Line Village Hall and later in the old St. Edward Parish Hall. The first Mass was celebrated on Holy Thursday, March 26, 1964 in what is the existing St. Edward Church. St. Edward Church was blessed by Bishop Robert F. Joyce on April 12, 1964. |

The massive granite rectory with its own tower, situated to the west of the church, was constructed between 1906 and 1908. On June 22, 1909, the silver statue of our Blessed Mother was raised into its present position between the granite towers. On August 1, 1909, the granite monument became the place of worship. St. Mary Star of the Sea is visible from many parts of the Newport area. At night, when it's lighted, it becomes a welcoming beacon for boaters, winter sports enthusiasts or just for folks who live in the lake area. The vista from its stone steps attracts visitors throughout the year. It has become one of Newport's most visited places for taking pictures and for simply enjoying the serenity of its interior. It is often referred to as the "Cathedral of the North". |
