To the English Speaking Vocationist Fathers, Brothers and Sisters Object: Devotional
My Dear Brothers and Sisters, Undoubtedly, prayer is the most essential, the most necessary and the most sustaining element of religious life. We must pray always both in private and in community; our community prayer must be both liturgical and Vocationist. As we cannot become saints unless we become Vocationist saints, so we cannot pray just anyway, we must pray as vocationists. Both our private and community prayer must express our charisma, our values, what is dear to us, and our vocationistality. In my way of looking at things, Fr. Justin has translated all our spirituality, all his ascetical and mystical teachings in prayers. I am afraid that many more years will pass before we will have all Fr. Justin’s writings in English, and that is why I would like to include in the next publication of our English Devotional all those prayers that contain the essential elements of our spirituality. Our poverty is affecting us in many ways; we are learning how to live without many things, but we should never learn how to live without our prayers. There are no more copies of our only English Devotional printed in USA in 1986. We must prepare a new edition of our Devotional. Before we start to plan a second edition, I want to hear from you and I want to have suggestions and recommendations on the format and most of all on the content. Taking as a starting point our current Devotional, tell me what to add, what to subtract, what to correct, and the sequence of our prayers that you might think easier for daily use. Presently I am inclined to move toward a four weeks monthly format, preceded by a guide for our community prayers and year round prayers. For any additional Vocationist prayers you would like to be added, kindly send me the title, the specific source, possibly the translation in good English and the motivation for wanting such a prayer. I would like to hear from each and everyone of you no later than October 1, 2008. I would like to hear from you even if you do not have any specific suggestion, correction or recommendation. Where and how can we have it printed? In what format and what size? Should we publish it, in hard cover or simple cover? Do we need ribbons? I encourage all superiors to discuss this issue with all the members of the community and then send me a summary of the unanimous recommendations, without interfering with the right and duty of each individual to send in his/her own recommendations or requests.
Counting on your cooperation, I thank you in advance
and I invoke on you all God’s blessings and love. Always at your service, Fr. Louis M. Caputo, S.D.V. of the Blessed Trinity
